Abstract:

A case-study about an Archives project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A result of a collaboration between two churches, The Mission Covenant Church of Sweden (MCCS) and the Communauté Evangélique du Congo (CEC ), sponsored by the Swedish International Development Agency, SIDA.

Target audience:

Archivists interested in the linkages between good recordkeeping and good governance and the role of the archives of NGO's and churches, with a focus on developing countries, particularly Africa.

Overall purpose and significance of session:
To highlight the importance of archives from NGO.s and churches in societies in developing countries, particularly Africa. Also to highlight the importance of making European holdings accessible from the colonial era.
Content description:
The session will highlight the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden and CEC Communauté Evangélique du Congo experiences in their work to conserve 40 years holdings in the Congo DRC. A forum that will inspire archivists in churches and NGO:s for similar projects. Methods on a grass-roots level in local congregations - training programme experiences of possibilities and problems. Is it possible to find cheap and simple methods against corruption and for transparency with good record-keeping?
