Abstract:
There are many reasons for social inequality in the world; among them are the economic, social and cultural policies developed by first-world powers, as well as wars, ethnic conflicts, political repression, or other troubles suffered by many communities world wide. And of course, we cannot forget the chaos produced by natural disasters which strike at a seemingly incessant rate across the globe. As a result of these inequalities, many communities depend on collaboration with outside organizations in order to live with dignity. Every person has the right to know their identity, their history, and to preserve the historical memory of the community they belong to. Archives must therefore serve people groups as well as individuals, as keepers of this heritage. Archivists Without Borders (Archiveros sin fronteras/Archivistes sans frontières) is an organization of volunteers working in the framework of development and co-operation with the objective of organizing the archives and preserving the archival heritage of the world. Respect, solidarity, and the defence of all people's ability to know their past are the general principles which inspire our action. The philosophy of the organization is to work in close co-operation with the communities desiring our collaboration, providing them with our expertise and professional experience. Our challenge is to help whoever needs it with training, technology, equipment, material, and other needs.
Target audience:
Archivists and professionals interested in development work and international collaboration.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
With this session, Archivists Without Borders aims at creating a professional forum where archivists can share opinions, reflections, and conversation about international archival solidarity. It hopes to propose a working model for international co-operation projects, enabling professionals in other regions of the world to set up the same type of organization and develop collaborative projects. To that effect, Archivists Without Borders will propose to all its sections around the world a new platform for international co-operation, with a new organization for the future.
Content description:
