Content description:
Everyone is seeking to establish what amounts to a digital philosopher's stone. Nowadays, all institutions that operate archives are faced with the challenge of preserving digital information for future generations in a form that is sustainable. The Rotterdam Municipal Archives have been working on their E-depot project for the past three years, and it has now become clear that that Municipal Archives will never be the same again. This project has had a huge impact upon the structure and working methods of the archives as a whole. The Rotterdam Municipal Archives are engaged in a process that will ensure that the digital storage and delivery of information will give rise to a more regular interaction with the public and a closer association between those involved in the formation of archives. The Municipality of Rotterdam is even considering assigning the Municipal Archives a management role when it comes to the formation of digital archives. This will however require changes to the internal structure of the archive itself and to the working methods it employs, including the introduction of an entirely new information architecture that will relate to the working processes, the use of modern archiving methods, standards for descriptions and search strategies.
