The session is designed to illustrate that disaster plans can not anticipate the particular details of a disaster. While the institution recovers from the disaster, it must also be actively engaged in documenting the disaster. Finally, the resources of the institution (both staff and documents) are critical to the rebuilding effort of the affected region.
Content description:
The session will examine the impact of Katrina on the New Orleans Archdiocesan Archives. It explores not only the recovery effort, but focuses on the commitment and changes made to the institution's existing policies and procedures. Secondly, the session examines how The Historic New Orleans Collection documented the experiences of first responders during the storm and the following weeks and months. Finally, the session examines the role of archives in the rebuilding effort.
