Abstract:

The emergence of the Internet, the World Wide Web and electronic governments have brought challenges to the work of managing different types of electronic information resources. These information resources require different metadata elements that help to explain the technical and administrative processes used to create, capture, manipulate, retrieve, use, store and preserve electronic information. There are numerous types of metadata standards, systems and tools for information retrieval that are used by different communities to manage their electronic information resources. A study was conducted to identify the use of metadata standards amongst Malaysian government agencies. The data revealed that many Malaysian government agencies did not adhere to any specific standard in developing, providing and preserving information in electronic form. This paper describes the context of the study and the results of the research are presented along with suggestions for further important areas of research, specifically on 'record-keeping metadata'.

Target audience:
Information officers, records managers, archivists, system administrators, IT personnel, librarians, resource centre managers, information system managers, archival educators, and other practitioners in archives, records management or information technology.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
To convey to the audience of the importance of metadata in developing, providing and preserving information in electronic form.
Content description:
The Faculty of Information Management at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was successful in attracting funding provided by the Malaysian Federal Government through the National Library of Malaysia to conduct research on the use of metadata standards amongst the Malaysian government agencies within the context of information management. The metadata study is complementary to other information and records management initiatives of the Malaysian government. The literature review describes the importance of metadata and several international metadata standards. Past studies on metadata are critically analysed and findings of the research are presented through the quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
